3D Graphics + Final Video [Deliver]

UPDATE: Final Video is UP Check it out here:

--------------

It's the Game that Never Ends~

I didn't come up with an ending to the video until a day before submission. Talk about close cutting. I decided to go with simple wireframe structures created using adobe illustrator and photoshop to easily demonstrate the process of the system to a wider audience. Wireframe images are more technical standard. In my mind.

Also, update on the logo! Did some messing about in illustrator to create something entirely new and I love it! I think it works so well with the characteristics of the system as a whole so.. Introducing...

Boards of Innovation [Deliver]

Posting these up here, more of a research summary I had to create for the brief. 4 Boards that introduced the proposal, the benefits, how the idea is innovative and such so..

They're pretty self explanatory, so I'll leave them with you! PS, doesn't the logo look neat!

Board 1 - Proposal

Board 2 - Research Areas

Board 3 - How the System works

Board 4 - How it can be implemented

3D Progress - Effects [Define]

The main visual behind ClouB is the glowing effect, we all know this (if you follow the blog, otherwise.. Go read it.) is an After Effects deal. Personally, I'm not good at After Effects but I'll do what I can.

Firstly, some more 3D shots of lighting tests, preview renders. Testing glass materials, window reflections, day light system, indoor lights and etc. Just some progress logging!

Effects Logger
On wards to Effects. The deal consisted of masks. I masked the area to glow, and layered more masks of the areas it would effect more and less then others. I did a quick paint in photoshop to see how a glowing effects WITHOUT mosaic texture would look. The few people I showed said it looks better and the mosaic style might get a little messy. People prefer to keep it subtle so I'll keep on those lines.

After I got the renders done, I worked on the effects. Using simple ellipses with glow effects do to a pulsing motion and tutorials on dust particles were my life savers! Again, masks were the key to getting the effect I wanted. From first glance, the rooms have a hue over them but closer inspection will show a soft feathered pulse effect. Neat right?

3D Progress 2 [Define]

Lighting and test effects in Max over here!

Never done any form of.. Realistic set up at all. Never mind an interior. Not my strong point at all but this has certainly gave me a lot of confidence.

You can see below the various stages of lighting up the room and tests I did of various times of day to try and pick up the mood I wanted. I LOVED the sunset living room in the 4th picture but it just wouldn't work right with everything else!

Testing Testing.
I did some messing in max, wondering how to do the pulsing glow of the cup hitting the table top. The ripple looked more like water and the effect I wanted wasn't exactly possible in Max, compared to After Effects but.. At least I tried!

Check out those grates! You don't see them after the main scene in the video, but the concept is there, the work is there and that's what makes me happy. I didn't leave bits out, I did it all even if you guys don't get to see it! It's here, okay!

At this point, all the 3D stuff is done. It's on wards to Rendering and Post Effects!

3D Progress 1 [Define]

To start, a lot of my test renders are draft and SUPER grainy. My current laptop can't render things out properly (money for renderfarming is not fun). There's a lot more pictures then text for this post.

So I started with the walls, using the line tool to create the entire boundary for the home. Cutting into the geometry for window spaces, doorframes and etc. Making them easier to edit into later on. Textured some simple images onto the walls, and bricked the outside (more for my own gain then anything else..)

Then I started messing with the insides, setting up assets, sorting out textures, making sure they don't stretch, and they rendered correctly. Bump maps, specular maps, leveling things out, not over cluttering. A lot more work went into this then my laptop could properly handle! It was a hard process, as I've been having PC troubles as of late anyway. Constant GPU crashes do not make me happy...

I think the finalized polycount sat over 1million polys.. Turbosquid assets don't really keep it low key that's for sure. Of course I made some patches myself! the kitchen, windows, the mirror and the lamp, and general wall interior was made by myself just so I got some neat practice in.

Then I'll add a roof details, lighting.. Change some bits.. Scenery.. Set it up.. Man, lighting is not my strong point but as the model stands. I'm happy with it right now, let's keep it up!

3D START! [Define]

Alright!

Quick update regarding the 3D process, the advice I've been given is to not design the room and spend all my time perfecting the room. As it's not my focal point. Thankfully, a fellow classmate has worked on interior designs so I'm going to be using one of his floor plans for my 3D model Many thanks! :)

I don't need to model all the different rooms, and I'll get various assets from Turbosquid to complete the interior.

More updates and screenshots later!

Interior Design Research [Define]

Now I can look at 3D, Finally! My Forté!

Now the main output for my project is a walk around the home while ClouB's features are being demonstrated. Which means interior designs!

What do you 'Mine'?
I wanted to design each of the rooms myself, just for a bit of personal touch. Tutors told me this wasn't such a smart idea if I want to stay within my time constraints and actually get an outcome for the project. SO, I'll be borrowing some other layouts in order to mesh up my own quick example in 3D space.

First, the rooms I want to make include:

  • Hallway
  • Bedroom
  • Kitchen
  • Living Room

The Bedroom is an added feature, only if I have the time will it be made and added in with the others. I chose them because they're the most user-interactive areas within a home - after monitoring my own families activities around the home and asking others about theirs. Most of their time is spent in the living room - if alone, or kitchen-areas in family homes.

Futuristic Modern Chic.
Check me out. The research I did for a mood board consisted mostly of white-space rooms with minimal furniture and sleek design to illustrate that ClouB is a futuristic concept that I want to bring to life now.

A room layout like.. Ikea Show rooms!

Unfortunately there's not one near by and I don't have access to a Drivers Licence, so the website will have to do. Alot of their online catalog is being replaced by 3D imagery anyway, the only issue is that their scenes are too busy. I want to refine it down to a simple design.

Or Jeetbo! Which is an online modern interior design company. Or shudah.co.uk! A huge Gallery of modern interior Designs. Above are some of my more favourite and suited examples categorized into the 4 sections of focus.

---

With these images scattered around my 3D Folder, I can pick out the favourites and fire them into 3DS Max, I'll pop up another post with progress shots and what not as they develop. Another thing I need to look into is how I'm going to make ClouB's visuals.. Glow!

Animated Textures! Projection Mapping!
